Tackling the Trickiest Windows: A Guide to Angled and Sloped Window Coverings
At Calgary Blinds Company, we often hear from homeowners and property managers who feel “stuck” with beautiful but challenging architecture. Large vaulted ceilings and A-frame windows offer stunning views and incredible light, but when it comes to privacy and light control—especially for guest cabins or bedrooms—they can feel like a design puzzle.
We recently had the pleasure of working with Amélie, who is managing a project for three beautiful cabins in BC. Her challenge? Finding a solution for large, sloped windows that ensures guests get the best sleep possible while keeping the majestic views fully accessible during the day.
If you’re staring at a triangular or angled window and wondering what to do, here is how we approach these unique spaces.
The Challenge: Form vs. Function
When dealing with angled windows (like the ones shown in our recent project photos), you generally have two main paths: Custom Honeycomb Blinds or Tailored Drapery.
1. Custom Angled Honeycomb Blinds
For Amélie’s cabins, honeycomb (cellular) blinds were the clear winner. Here is why they are often the best choice for sloped architecture:
Total Window Exposure: When raised, these blinds stack tightly at the top or follow the angle of the frame, leaving the glass completely clear.
Blackout Performance: As seen in our video here our installation in Bridlewood, Calgary, AB. Honeycomb cells are incredible at blocking light, making them perfect for “sleep-in” mornings.
Symmetry: We can split large spans into sections that align perfectly with your window dividers for a clean, architectural look. Also, check this video that was taken in Killarney, Calgary, AB for angled honeycomb blinds here.

2. The Drapery Approach
Drapery adds a soft, luxurious feel to a room. However, with angled windows, there is a “stack-back” to consider. Because curtains on a slope are often tied back to one side, they will always cover a portion of the window even when “open.”
Pro Tip: If you have a massive wall (like the 237-inch span Amélie inquired about), curtains can be a beautiful statement piece, but they require more physical space than blinds.

Motorization: The Guest-Friendly Choice
For vacation rentals or hard-to-reach vaulted windows, we almost always recommend direct-power motorization.
Ease of Use: Guests don’t have to fumble with long chains or protective sleeves.
Maintenance Free: Hardwired systems mean no one has to climb a ladder to recharge batteries every few months.
Longevity: Quality motors typically last 6–8 years and are easily replaceable, ensuring your investment stands the test of time. You can see this video of motorized honeycomb blinds.
Choosing the Right Palette
Don’t let a photo guide your final decision! Lighting in a mountain cabin in BC is very different from the lighting in our Calgary showroom. We always suggest seeing fabrics in person.
For the cabin project, we recommended 93036B—a warm grey with subtle brown texture lines. It’s a “chameleon” color that bridges the gap between modern cool tones and the natural warmth of wood-paneled ceilings.
Expert Installation Matters
Angled windows leave zero room for error. A measurement off by even half an inch can prevent a blind from operating smoothly along its track. That’s why we offer full-service measurement and installation—we take the liability so you can just enjoy the view.
